Design Your Wedding Dress

A wedding dress is one of the most important parts of the wedding planning process, and a lot of time goes into trying to find the perfect one. If you’ve spent hours looking through magazines, visiting shops, going through brochures and anything else you can get your hands on without finding the right kind of dress for you then you may find that designing your own dress will be a lot less effort and be the perfect solution!

There are so many options online and all over the world for a wedding dress that it’s always going to be difficult to find one that has the perfect match to what you want. If you have a dress in mind, being able to design your own wedding dress, even if that means simply shortening the arms or mixing two different dresses together can provide you with a great dress exactly as you imagine. You also have to consider your wedding and bridal makeup, but that can usually be done second.

There is no doubt that there are a lot more options when it comes to wedding dresses for brides these days. However with choice comes the inevitable problem of being overwhelmed. There is definitely a lot more slack cut to brides - wedding dresses no longer have to be purely white for example, they can be whatever colour you want.

Knowing how to design your wedding dress is a different matter though! Many women are intimidated by the thought of designing it, after all most brides have never designed a piece of clothing in their life. However if you’ve used a sewing machine before you are well on your way to being able to make your own dress. Just because it is a wedding dress doesn’t make it any more difficult to sew than any other kind of clothing - so don’t be nervous or intimated by it when designing!

First of all you need to get an idea of what is currently in fashion for wedding dresses. The best way to do this is to visit bridal shops- as many as possible - to find ones that have dresses that you like. Don’t be afraid to try the dresses on, but don’t make it too obvious that you have no intention of buying them! Look for parts of the dresses that you like, and then you can merge them together when finally doing your design a wedding gown bit when it all comes together.

Being able to design your own wedding dress is a wonderful experience. Every bride loves her dress and treasures it for the rest of her life, but there is something extra special about being able to design your dream wedding dress. If you like the look of several different dresses or gowns for example, you can take the best bits of both and incorporate them into your design making the perfect dress. Whether you are going for a beach wedding dress or something more traditional you have compelte control over the final product.

The sewing machine you create the dress on is of utmost importance. There are many options on the market, and computerized sewing machines for wedding dresses are a lot more powerful and sophisticated than before making the actual creation a lot easier and faster than it used to be.

One of the things you’ll have to decide on when designing a wedding dress is the fabric as this will dictate many other aspects of the dress. It shouldn’t be difficult to get your hands on the fabric you need - most bridal shops do sell fabrics and other parts of wedding dresses that you can use when creating. When choosing a fabric make sure to be careful about how it looks (i.e. will it crinkle easily etc) and how easy it is to work with if you are a novice designer!

Once your dress is designed and ready to go you can start adding the finishing touches such as beads, lace and other things to liven up and make a dress really stand out. Of course you can keep it simple here, and you definitely shouldn’t go over the top with the embellishments, but a few here and there subtly placed can make the difference between an average dress and a stunning one.

There is not doubt that can be a worrying prospect designing your own dress. Will it look OK? Will I mess up the stitching? Will people laugh? The main thing is to remember to have fun - this is your wedding and if you want a wedding dress that fits yo perfectly and is exactly how you imagined then design your own wedding dress may be the way to go. That doesn’t mean you can’t take advice from others though - especially professional designers who may be able to point you in the right direction and tell you if you are going wrong.

Remember that design a wedding dress process is a long one so you need to start early! The sooner the better, as there is plenty to plan when it comes to a wedding and you definitely don’t want to be rushing the wedding dress design at the end or it could turn into disaster.
